Fantastic August 18, 2008 This is just a great product! I cannot believe the clarity and the number of stations you can receive. It is very well made and easy to setup. I am going to buy two for friends this Christmas. My only complaint is the stickers they put on the radio and how long it takes to remove them.
Everything worked fine -- BUT August 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Everything worked fine in the same room as my modem. But my bedroom 2 floors, 40' above my modem - it would not maintain a signal.
Grace Internet Radio 4.5/5 Stars August 13, 2008 I have had my radio a couple of weeks. I actually rate it a 4.5/5 Stars.
I had no trouble setting up the radio. Dialing in the radio stations to listen to is a pain but only a minor inconvenience as in actual use the Reciva.com website makes it easy to select your favorite stations. These are downloaded to the radio over the internet when you select Stations. Hence the limited number of presets is not a major problem in my view. A PC is not required to use the radio once your selections are set up on Reciva.
I was able to set it up to play radio stations which "simulcast" over the Internet, Podcasts from the Internet and streaming audio from my PC (for which you do need an active PC). I have not attempted to set it up to receive audio from Pandora as I am not interested in a pay service.
So what don't I like.
Startup is a little slow as it connects to your WiFi network, downloads your list of favorite stations, and builds up the buffer. (I suspect this is inherent in any Internet Radio.) Once it starts playing, it seems like any other radio except there is no static and it deliver clear crisp audio.
I do wish they had a portable version with a carrying handle.
The glossy black front panel and buttons make the buttons difficult to see in low light situations.
The labels are a pain to remove. I used my finger nail to remove the glossy outer surface of the labels and then used mineral spirits to remove the remaining paper and the glue. This did not appear to damage the surface at all.
This radio would be great for expatriates, people who have relocated to other areas of the country but want to stay in touch with whats happening back home, folks who live in rural areas or other areas with poor reception and people living near the Mexican border who do not understand or care for the Mexican radio stations.
I really like the radio!
Doug
Where has this been all my life? August 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My satellite radio is getting a rest. I'm a big fan of old time radio, and I've found stations that play nothing buy OTR, 24 x 7. Clear reception of the BBC World Service (without the repeats you get on the domestically-provided versions), and of all the regional BBC stations are a real bonus. The classical stations are complemented by the excellent sound produced by such a small speaker.
The "on demand" features available on many stations are great -- I like being able to listen to a story when I want to, rather than tuning in at any particular time.
I haven't yet tried streaming from my PCs, which is of minimal importance (I already stream to my stereo via bluetooth), but if it works as well as everything else, it should be no problem.
The radio was simple to set up. Getting new stations added isn't as simple as just filling out the form on reciva.com, however. I'm still waiting five days later for some to be added, and they haven't yet fixed the Syracuse, NY AM station's transmission. despite my report of the error. It's supposed to be WSYR-AM, but the feed is BBC Arabic.
That's a very minor problem, however.
I LOVE this radio, and will probably buy one or two more in the year ahead.
My only wish is that I could have this in the car -- but universal wifi isn't here yet. I can dream, can't I?
Great Sound, Needs Software Work August 10, 2008 I got the Grace WiFi to be our bathroom radio, and I'm really impressed by how good it sounds. The LCD display and knob controls work fairly well when navigating through radio stations. I often stream NPR or Deutsche Welle. The controls work pretty well with Pandora also, and I like how you can "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" tracks, just as you would on pandora.com. The major problem I have with the Grace, however, is its problem with local file shares. I run a Linux desktop at home with thousands of mp3s, shared with Samba. The Grace seems to have problems with so many files. To speed up its access to media files, the radio scans the files and caches an index on the file share. The radio seems to give up after a point, however, and when I look at the index file, only a small subset of my mp3s are listed. My tedious workaround has been to create a separate share per artist directory.
Beyond this, many of the files' track information (artist, album, etc.) isn't stored in the index (I'm not sure if the radio builds the index using the id3 tag or the file name), so often, the tracks from multiple albums get lumped together.
Oh well - this was a fairly inexpensive device, and it works rather well, but I wouldn't use it for anything other than a bathroom or kitchen radio. For the living room, I'd recommend the Logitech Squeezebox Duet Network Music System, which we've also gotten. This device has much better software.
