5 out of 5 stars Love This Camera   July 26, 2008
First let me say I am not a camera fanatic so I am not familiar with all the technical aspects of cameras and am limited mainly to using the automatic settings most of the time. The only thing I normally change is to disable the flash.

That said, I think this is a wonderful camera for folks like me. It takes high quality pictures on the automatic setting and the feature I really love is the 10x zoom. That makes a huge difference.

The build quality of this camera is nice and sturdy. It is on the heavy side compared to other compact digital cameras, but it feels solid and is well constructed. The controls are easy enough to figure out, the instruction manual is clearly written and covers all the aspects of the camera, and it comes with all the accessories most people would need (but you have to get your own SD flash card).

I like this camera because it is easy to use, the pictures so far have come out very, very nice, the 10x zoom is great, and it just feels like high quality when I hold it. I think it is a better value than the TZ5K as the latter's extra features aren't worth the difference in price, but if you are the type who lets those little things nag at you, it might be better to consider the TZ5K just so you feel like you have everything.

I've always had good luck with Panasonic products (this is my first camera from them, though) so I had no hesitation getting this one when choosing a brand.

5 out of 5 stars Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ4 zoom really works!   July 25, 2008

I bought a Fuji f30 on its reputation for having the best picture quality among camera of that size. It really DID take great pictures, but the ergonomics were problematical... it was complicated to use, the controls were not intuitive, and it was limited to 3X zoom. Moreover, I discovered that just about very use I had for a camera seemed to require greater zoom capability. I'd been looking at the Lumix line, and decided that the TZ4 was the price point for the features I wanted. I bought one and after a week, was able to sell the f30 (still like new) for more than I paid for the Lumix. The Lumix's conrols are more logical and intuitive than the f30's so it's MUCH easier and more convenient to use. Its best picture quality is about 98% that of the Fuji's, but all in all it's a much more useful camera for my purposes. Not only can I take the technical and whiteboard shots I need but could never get before, but with 10x optical zoom I can also take respectable wildlife shots of the sort that would typically require an SLR. Shots taken with the digital zoom, however, are less imposing. Lumix was the first line of small and moderately priced enthusiast super-zoom cameras on the market. It has competition now, but Lumix cameras are still the smallest, and feature for feature, among the least expensive of the bunch.

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Very Good Camera!   July 25, 2008
After reading many reviews mainly from people who cant resist comparing this camera with a 700 dollar DSLR.
It is better than I was expecting.
The build quality is top notch. Good quality buttons, nice looking and still small enough to fit in a shirt pocket.
Several people gave this camera high marks but complained the indoor performance was lacking.
I am getting very good indoor results. The camera overall is very easy to use. With a little practice you should be taking nice photo's.
In movie mode this camera rivals my dedicated camcorder in most ways except in sound quality.
The sound recording with this camera is not so prominent that you hear every little sound. With my camcorder recording in stereo the sound is so prominent, that is it distracting.
I've been using a standard 2 gig SD card which seems to work good. I do think one of the faster write cards would be a good idea especially if your doing a lot of Video.
The video in highest quality mode does use some space. With a 2 gig SD card you will get about 20 minutes of video, which for me is all I've needed so far.

Bottom line I would recommend this camera. It does what Panasonic advertises it should do.
It takes great photo's and video, and seems to be a very high quality camera that should give good service.
So for the great price that Amazon is offering this camera for, I would say go for it.
I ordered this camera on Monday morning, and received it Thursday morning. Which is typical top notch service from Amazon.
One final thought, comparing this camera with the TZ5. The TZ4 is the best bang for the buck.
The TZ5 does offer a few extras, but I have a feeling you will find this camera very feature rich and probably all the camera you will need.

Very very good camera, I am very impressed. I purchased it for my girlfriend who originally had a canon sd1000 which she managed to drop after 2 months of owning it. However, it seems like it was a turn for the better. I am far more impressed with the features of this camera, the zoom is amazing and the scenery pre-sets are great as well. overall I would say it out performs the sd1000 in many areas. However there is one little disappointment and its the darkness of the pictures when using the AI features, but that can easily be overcome with the backlight setting. All in all, she is very happy with it and so am I so I decided to purchase the Z5 for myself. That will come with another review when I take a couple hundred pictures with it haha.

No frills, feels really solid, pretty compact for a 10x. But I think if I had to do it over I would get the TZ5K, the manual is annoying when it says it can do a certian function then has a * saying TZ5 only....
