Amazon.com A tale of two sisters competing for the same king, The Other Boleyn Girl uses historical facts as window dressing for this work of fiction that is entertaining, if not wholly believable. Anne Boleyn (Natalie Portman) is the doe-eyed vixen ordered by her power-hungry uncle to bewitch King Henry VIII (Eric Bana). Her shy sister Mary (Scarlett Johansson) has always been in Anne's shadow; Anne is prettier, more accomplished, and desired by many men. So when the King picks Mary--the "other Boleyn girl"--as his mistress, Anne turns on her sister and schemes to become not only the King's consort, but his new queen. With a pair of American actresses in the lead roles and an Aussie portraying their hunky object of desire, the English accents are all over the place in this period piece with a modern feel. Though the Boleyn girls' mother points out that her "daughters are being traded like cattle for the advancement of men," it is Anne who ultimately throws her slight weight around to bully Henry into doing her bidding. When he begs her to give herself to him, Anne--wearing a Carrie Bradshaw-esque "B" pendant on her neck--counters, "Make me your Queen." Is the audience really supposed to believe that Henry the VIII--the most powerful man in the land--would divorce Catherine of Aragon, separate from the Catholic church, and put England in upheaval simply because Anne refused to sleep with him until he jumped through all her hoops? "I have torn this country apart for you," he hisses at her before finally getting his way. Based on Philippa Gregory's bestselling novel of the same name, The Other Boleyn Girl features an attractive cast and a familiar plot with some icky twists. Kieran McGuigan's cinematography is breathtaking and is as crucial to setting the film's tone as the dialogue. Actually, it fares better: Lines such as "Well? Did he have you?!" sound almost comical. But the sweeping shots of Henry's kingdom and the carefully framed close-ups of Portman and Johansson are breathtaking in their beauty and say what words simply cannot. --Jae-Ha Kim Get to Know the Cast of The Other Boleyn Girl (click on images to see more films from each actor) Natalie Portman (Anne Boleyn) | Scarlett Johansson (Mary Boleyn) |

Let's Play Telephone with Tudor History September 2, 2008 Do you remember that "telephone" game? The child at the beginning of the circle whispers a word to the kid next to them and it passes down the line becoming more distorted as it goes along. By the time it makes it back to the beginning it usually has no resemblance to what it was supposed to be.
This is a pretty good metaphor for "The Other Boleyn Girl." The dramatic license in Phillipa Gregory's caused controversy but ultimately resulted in an entertaining story.
In contrast, the film plays somewhat like a game of telephone that started with a Cliff Notes version of Gregory's novel. As the film progress, the storyline spirals farther and farther outside the realm of credibility.
The life and times of Henry VIII were tumultuous, dramatic, and populated by interested characters. It should have been an easy task to write a reasonably entertaining script about this era. Unfortunately, a fifth grader's plagarized essay on this period would a lot easier to get through than this extremely boring and disappointing film adaptation.
I can't fault Eric Bana's performance. He made a great Henry VIII despite limited screen time. Other cast members made valiant efforts to squeeze something out of the terrible script they were saddled with. Sadly, the beautiful costumes and scenery might have been an asset to this film if I could have stayed awake to appreciate them better.
Avoid this turkey.
Henry VIII September 1, 2008 Good period piece, exceptional costuming, sets.Good Story, but had difficulty picturing Natalie Portman in the role as the deceitful sister.
THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL August 29, 2008 GREAT DVD. ON AMAZON YOU CAN GET IT AT A FRACTION OF THE ORIGINAL COST.
Pretty Good August 28, 2008 Saw this at the theater, first. Not too bad. Good to see natalie Portman has started to act. her amadala was, to be honest, pretty plastic. Scarlet Johansson was good. She has a much better range than Portman. The Henry VIII actor should have been chosen to look a bit more like Henry. Also, the presence of the English King was a bit weak.
Okay, but see HBO's the Tudors for real drama. August 22, 2008 The drama was weak compared to the Henry VIII story line in HBO's the Tudors. In this story, Henry visits the Boleyns, falls off his horse in a ride with Ann (NP), injuries nursed by recently married untitled mans wife Mary(SJ) who is then asked to come to court (gives husband job), takes Mary to his bed, she eventually becomes pregnant and Henry's eye continues to wonder (to Ann) who teases Henry with flirts yet rejects his gifts. It glosses over the separation of England from the Roman Catholic Church as well as the religious and political turmoil, and treasonous plots other than adultry and thus becomes boring. Ok for a 2 hour rent.
