Album Description The man who has been called `the poet laureate of the interstate' has reached deep into his soul, bringing forth an album of unparalleled maturity powered by a piercing musical vision. Produced by T Bone Burnett ("O' Brother Where Art Thou," Robert Plant, Allison Krauss) Two disc package includes CD and high quality audio DVD.
People en Espanol After Freedom?s Road, his first album in five years, John Mellencamp made it clear why he had such loyal fans. He?s made a career out of making himself vulnerable, with lyrics that undeniably come from the heart, and aided by his guitar, he generates a mood that?s more Americana melancholy than pop. After a year of being somewhat of a recluse, Mellencamp is back with 14 tracks filled with anguish, pain, resentment, and frustration. In songs like "If I Die Sudden," "Don?t Need This Body," and "Troubled Land," the singer-songwriter seems to be more like the Americana equivalent to Damien Rice rather than Bob Dylan, to whom he?s been compared to before. It?s a disc that, as my friend says, you can listen to while kicking a can and walking the streets. --Ernesto Sanchez (People en Espanol )

Walking in the footsteps of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan October 5, 2008 I had never been a fan of John Mellencamp. While purchasing a book here on Amazon I notice this CD and the title got me curious. It arrived last friday after the first play I was in awe. A true poet in the likes of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan with words that ring out within these troubling times. I'm now a convert a new found respect for an artist who has been around for nearly 30 years an I ignored. Since recieving this CD 3 days ago I went and bought 4 more Melloncamp CD's waiting for them to arrive with great anticipation for words to fill the soul.
Disappointing release October 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After the amazingly strong "Freedom's Road" I was very excited about this new CD. I have to say it's one of his weakest releases in a VERY LONG TIME. The lyrics are strong, but there are very few memorable songs on this disk. Usually, there are only 1 or 2 below par songs on a Mellencamp release, this one only has a few good ones. This is a depressing and somewhat boring release. I have around 10-11 of his CD's and I usually like it when he stretches and does something different (Mr. Happy go Lucky, Cuttin' Heads), but this is just average folk music.
john mellencamp - great, as usual September 26, 2008 john continues to get more introspective with age - this is not an album to rock and roll to - it's an album to absorb
HAPPY, album...............( Ya right !! ) September 24, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
As GRANDMA said......." IF you have nothing good to say ( sing ), then don't say (sing) anything at all ". I wish all singers would remember that. They would sell more records. HAPPY,FUN,... SONGS are what the coustomers pay for. I really don't want DEPRESSING music. How can they charge people for this album. Mellencamp used to be my favorite singer, NOT POLITICS,.
Great mid life wisdom September 23, 2008 This new CD has a raw feel like Rough HarvestRough Harvest but with new material. It deals with love still being wonderful and thinking about the idea that there are fewer days ahead than behind.
