Product Description Rosetta Stone Arabic Level I & II opens up a new world to you by teaching you how to communicate with a new culture! Reviews and testing features help identify weak points and work harder on them Comes with illustrated User's Guides and Curriculum Text books Ages 6 & up
Amazon.com Product Description Learn a new language with the award-winning method used by the U.S. State Department to train diplomats. Proven effective by NASA astronauts, Peace Corps volunteers, and millions of students worldwide, the Rosetta Stone Language Library teaches new languages faster and easier than ever before. We all learn our childhood language by associating new words and phrases with the world around us. The Rosetta Stone method replicates this process by presenting vivid, real-life images to convey the meaning of each new phrase. Instead of translating, memorizing, and studying rules of grammar, you actually learn to think in the new language. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated systematically, leading to everyday proficiency. This comprehensive program provides up to 550 hours of mastery instruction in listening comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking. Systematic structure teaches vocabulary and grammar naturally, without lists or drills. Previews, exercises, and tests accompany every lesson, and there are automated tutorials throughout the program. Graphical speech recognition displays your voiceprint and compares it with the native speaker to help improve your pronunciation. (Ages 6 and older)

Arabic is Much Easier Behind the Wheel September 9, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As I have stated in other product reviews, Rosetta Stone is clearly overrated but solid. The problem with the overall approach is that it requires that you spend your learning time in front of a computer, which is where you do everything else. Lots of competition. I prefer to do my language learning during my otherwise wasted downtime while I drive. If I study a language while driving, I win because I use otherwise wasted hours. I, like most Americans, spend more time driving than ever before. When I get home, I want to do other essentials. My favorite car Arabic course is Behind the Wheel Arabic 8 CDs. This approach frees up your computer, saves your eyes, and allows you to learn to speak ArabicBehind the Wheel Arabic (8 One Hour Multi-Track CDs) while you drive.

Can Be Useful May 3, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This program attemps to have the user simply absorb the language, imitating the way a native speaker learns. However, a native speaker uses the language constantly for years, which a program cannot duplicate. In the absence of that, it seems to me unreasonable to learn a new language with ZERO explanations of grammatical structures, basic words, and word-formation. More of a balance would be in order. Similarly, the fact that the program does not teach Arabic script is a serious drawback. No one can be expected to deciper the complex orthography of Arabic just by hearing the words and memorizing how they look on the screen. Even native speakers are taught the alphabet systematically! Thirdly, the learning seems too passive. The user never needs to generate his or her own Arabic--only to choose between the pictures or sentences provided. Even in the "speaking" sections one need only copy what the speaker has already said. The main positive thing about this program is the repetition. The user sees the new words many, many times and absorbs them easily. All things considered, for someone who knows the script and basic grammar this program can be a valuable tool for listening comprehension and vocabulary building.

This is my third Rosetta Stone purchase. (Spanish, French, Arabic) This is a wonderful product! I have overcome my fear of foreign languages and my former belief that native Americans cannot learn more than one language. Over the last nine years Rosetta Stone has boosted my self esteem and led to many wonderful traveling experiences. After using Rosetta Stone one and a half hours a day for two years I speak one hundred times better than students who have studied ten plus years in a traditional (boring) classroom setting. Although they can probably conjugate verbs on paper better than I. Rosetta Stone is not for everyone. This program works best for someone who intends to take the plunge and acquire a language for life. The Rosetta Stone method teaches the way a baby learns. It is a long process of head scratching and self correction. For example, if someone hands you a glass of water and says the word drink, you may associate drink to be used exclusively with water until someone hands you a glass of milk and also says the word drink. You must be resourceful and look for clues to distinguish between pictures. Your clues may be shallow at first, but deeper understanding will follow in time. Unfortunately, you will not be aware of the foundation you are building for quite a while. One fine day you will find yourself understanding new phrases (that you thought you have never heard before) at full speed and being able to respond at full speed. What a rush!! If you do plan this as a life long journey but you are planning a trip soon, do Rosetta Stone along with Pimsleur. Later on, if you want to learn another language, you can use your old Rosetta Stone CD to check the answers (cheat) on the new one.
Down side- -will not feel results nor be able to show of to your friends for a long time(get Pimsleur) -not clear how to start program, need to create your own lesson method (get Pimsleur) -will not help at all if you are leaving next month for a week vacation (get Pimsleur) -recording your voice section is useless (after a couple of years of self study, hone your speaking skills with a tutor or foreign lover :-)
Save your classroom grammar books for light reading two or three years down the road when you are approaching fluency. You will pick up the grammar ten times faster and easier. Study a few years on your own before getting a tutor, a bigger repertoire makes for better conversation.
Laptop Users: Be Warned January 31, 2007 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
The Rosetta Stone application requires that the language CD be present in the harddrive, and it *continuously* spins up the CD disk while the program runs. This unfortunate design will quickly run down your laptop batteries, making this application unsuitable for travel. My repeated requests to Fairfield Technologies, the Rosetta Stone software company, to remedy this problem were declined. Considering the substantial price paid for this software, it should *behave* like software, and not a DVD. If the application could be installed and run like normal software, it would not uselessly drain you laptop batteries.
