3 out of 5 stars Linksys WRT610 Connection Issues   August 29, 2008
I recently purchased the WRT610N and the matching Linksys WSUB600N dual band adapter. First some comments on the router set-up. The WRT610N router was very easy to install and configure. Using the new Linksys set-up wizard is very straight forward. However, in setting up encryption on the router be prepared to spend time on the phone with Linksys. Setting up wireless encryption is a very trying experience. However, it's doable with good tech support. The wired Ethernet network connection works as advertised. Also, using the matching Linksys WSUB600N USB Ethernet network adapter was also straight forward. I used a Lenovo R61 laptop with the WSUB600N. Keeping a stable network connections on both radio bands was problematic. The network connection would keep dropping. (I should explain that I was only six feet away from the router, and there were no other wireless devices present}. Has anyone else heard of this? I've returned the WSUB600N adapter for an exchange. I haven't tested out the replacement. I will report back on what I find out. The last item I had a chance to test was the Storagelink interface. Go into the router configuration settings and select the UPnP media server settings and away you go. I was able to establish a connection to the WRT610N media server from a PS3 console. I haven't done any streaming to see if this works. Where I am having issues is in using USB attached storage to show up as a share on Vista. Using the WRT610N web interface to configure share permissions is confusing at best. Anyone who can point me to any documentation that lays out this process would make my day.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed   August 28, 2008
This Linksys is the most expensive router I have purchased. For the price I expected trouble-free music streaming AND good tech support. I recieved neither. To be honest, I could have rated the router higher for some of its advanced features if the tech support had not been so useless.

3 out of 5 stars No use of 5 GHz and USB Connect for me   August 28, 2008

I had purchased this router to upgrade from a Linksys Vonage wireless router (Wireless G). I was having trouble in streaming content over my network using a PS3. I also had a external 500GB hard drive (Iomega) which i thought would be cool to be able to connect to the router directly than connect to my PC and then share. I also purchased a Dlink DAP 1522 Accesspoint/ bridge to utilize the N speeds since PS3 has a G adapter and not N.

I had run some baseline tests on my network prior to changing the router.

My Wired LAN was providing me 51-56 Mbps (one PC to my laptop). Wireless from my PC to PS3 was between 3.4 to 3.2 Mbps (using Tversity). Internet d/l speed on my PS3 was 2 Mbps.

After getting the router i redid all the connections and followed instructions for installing the router (The s/w install on my XP PC took a very long time ~ 45 mins) but after that setup was a breeze. My DAP 1522 setup took time as I had to reset it twice becuase i kept on messing the Static IP settings.

KEY NOTES:
1. My PS3 is first floor about 20-25 ft away from my router which is on second floor. 5 GHz was poorer signal and SLOWER speed. I used 2.4 GHz and i got a 70% signal and BETTER throughput.
2. I ran new tests. PC to Laptop now averaged 64 Mbps (~12% improvement due to Gigabit). PC to PS3 about 19 Mbps. So, a substantial improvement. However, please note- PS3 gives DLNA and media server and protocol errors if you use any encryption on the wireless network. I had to use Mac address based authentication and use static IP to secure my network.
3. The speed of USB drive access is about 39 Mbps on a wired connection. If i connect it back to desktop PC, i get the same wired speed as i get for my PC (64 Mbps)

All in all, I feel that in my setup, I wasted money in paying for two features:

1. 5 Ghz- evidently it works very well on short distances but for longer distances, 2.4 is a better deal
2. USB connect - Not worth it. Loss in performance is too great. Also when using the web admin utility, it takes a long time to load up that page when the device is connected...very irritating.

Wirleless N - Boasts of 300 Mbps, but i got only 1/15th of it, however, a 6X improvement over the wireless G speed and solved my problem.

Please note that my setup is different from what you may have and results I have got may not be similar to what you should expect. I just wanted to share a guidance on how things actually change. For example 300 Mbps is really a myth and the reality for me is 20 Mbps!!!

1 out of 5 stars wireless keeps dropping out   August 27, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I read other reviews about wireless connection drops but decided to buy this one for several reasons. First it was on sale at best buy, second it was dual band with wireless N and some peole had rated it good and lastly I've had other linksys routers and they worked fine.

I wish I had listened to the bad reviews. After purchasing I updated the firmware from linksys with no problems. I was able to connect wirelssly with just an occassional connection drop for about a week and then the connections starting dropping on both the 2.4 and 5 ghz frequencies all the time. I though that maybe it was my ISP Comcast but I tested my connection by plugging directly into my cable which is a linksys modem and had no problems with dropped connections. I have since return the router and would not recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars No problem here ...   August 27, 2008

Unlike others, my WRT610N experience has been a good one ... thanks to my ISP's (Earthlink) support team, who guided me through the troublesome installation with my two Mac laptops, one old, one brand new, and the different operating systems I'm using with them and the quirks between those and Linksys. Suffice to say, lots of work involved manually typing in router addresses, etc., and running lots of tests, but I got everything up and running in an evening. Oh yeah, the router -- combined with my new Apple Airport Express -- gives me really excellent connection speed when I'm running wireless.
