Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
"This rare CD presents stunning examples of advertisements from the early 20th century. Drawing heavily on the works of such great masters such as the inimitable J. Walter Thompson, this CD helps in understanding the thought process of the people at the turn of the century. Amazingly, even in those early years, Thompson employed psychologists to understand the peoples psyche before launching a campaign. This and the emergence of a neo-opulent American society gave rise to a plethora of immensely innovative and eye-catching advertising campaigns that found their way onto the pages of popular periodicals. During this period, the introduction of automation in factories created a situation where supply exceeded demand. There was only way in which the manufacturers could coax potential buyers to opt for their products - by presenting them in a convincing and forceful style. This need gave the necessary leg-up to advertising. Companies such as Lux and Ponds spent a large part of their revenue in advertising to keep ahead of emerging competition and this is evident from the immensely absorbing advertisements you can examine on this CD. Enchanting, fascinating and forceful, the well-preserved images in this CD have a certain charm about them, which keeps you glued to your screens for many pleasant hours in delightful examination of their contents."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars History before television   April 13, 2007
I bought these CDs as a bundle pack because I am in the advertising business. There is an unbelievable amount of information on every one of these CDs. The pictures are fantastic and the quality is great of a CD-ROM. It is well worth the money and I highly recommend them to anyone who is in advertising as a career or who is interested in any of the seperate catagories as a hobby, such as photography or cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Pre Television Advertising   May 1, 2006
As a marketing student I'm interested in how things have been sold to people over the years. This disk is an example of the oldest marketing I've looked at (most of it is from the turn of the 20th century and much of the concepts are primitive compared to modern marketing methods.

Still, it's interesting to see how modern markeing concepts - including the idea that sex and adventure sell better than anything else - were developed at this time.

The quality of the images is very good and you can see how concepts progressed.
