Amazon.com Product Description

Leatherman packs the full-size Skeletool with the tools you're likely to use most often. | Introducing the Brand New Skeletool from Leatherman Now you're ready to lighten your load and boost your survival skills -- with Leatherman's Skeletool. At a mere 5 ounces the new, full-sized multitool keeps weight and volume to a minimum without sacrificing quality and true functionality, and that's what the Skeletool is all about. Many multitools have multiple options, but they're often heavier -- and they're loaded with more features than most people actually need on a regular basis. Conversely, pocket knives are light and streamlined, but they render themselves useless when the task calls for a more versatile tool. Enter the new Skeletool platform, offering minimal weight, compact size and endless capabilities. And with the Skeletool's integrated, removable pocket clip, you can easily clip this tool onto a belt, a pack, or a vest -- with no sheath or tote required. Key User Features The Skeletool CX has a large knife blade that can be accessed while the tool is closed; to open it, just place your thumb in the thumbhole at the base of the blade and rotate it out until it's fully extended -- which will engage the safety lock. This locking mechanism is noted with a padlock symbol on the tool. To unlock the blade, press the locking mechanism towards the handle until the blade slides past the lock. Equipped with a universal bit driver, the Skeletool offers real utility options like no other multitool. To change the tool bits, simply unfold the tool and remove the bit from the bit driver -- and pop it out. And replacing bits is just as easy. Just press a new one into position and you're good to go. There's even a spare bit located in the handle side opposite the knife blade. This tool includes the following bits: Phillips #1 and #2, screwdriver 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch. In the plier jaws you'll find a hard-wire cutter and a regular wire cutter. The regular wire cutter is great for softer grades of wire, but the hard-wire cutter is excellent for heavier jobs -- like cutting and bending fishhooks. Multitool Capabilities: The Skeletool keeps it simple -- and light, and compact, and easy to transport. Why waste time with pointless, heavy add-ons when all the basics are right at your fingertips? With its open hardware, skeletal design and hardy appearance, the Skeletool boasts a premium stainless steel blade, pliers, a universal bit driver, and a carabiner/bottle opener ... and that's it. Key Tech Specs: - Length: 4 inches/10 cm closed
- Weight: 5 ounces/142 grams
- Materials: Stainless steel, 420HC
- Included Bits: Phillips #1 and #2, Screwdriver 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch

Excelent Utilitarian Multitool July 3, 2008 This is a really nice tool. It's several ounces lighter than any other multi-tool with comparable features, and very well designed at that. My favorite feature (sadly) is the bottle opener. Every other multi tool I've seen has a small flat bottle opener, which is only used when absolutely necessary. The Skeletool has a very functional opener, and with it's overall slim profile, which hooks nicely inside my jean's pocket, it's the first thing I reach for when cracking open a cold one.
The outside knife is also very handy, and comes surprisingly sharp (have the cut thumb to prove it). I didn't find it overly tight at first, and after a few dozen openings it did make it more smooth. It also locks very nicely, and feels very solid once opened. There's no noticeable wobble unless excess force is applied side to side. The cut-out makes it very easy to flick open. The slight curve in the body makes for a very comfortable hold when the knife is extended, and feels very solid.
The universal bit screw driver works well when one side of the body is opened, however you cannot use it when the body is collapsed. I do wish they had found two places to stach extra bits instead of only one, which could have let them extend the recepticle for the driver bits and make the driver usable while the body is closed. Oh, well.
The pliers work well, no spring action, though maybe a little wide at the tip. This likely adds strength, so I'm not complaining, but a more needle like profile would be nice (I might try grinding down the tip a bit). TAKE NOTE: The plyer head is NOT stainless, and if get it wet with salt water it will rust QUICKLY. I accidentally took in into the ocean while fishing, and the next day it was difficult to open. The blade also became very difficult to flick open and for a couple days I had to use two hands to open the blade. This was solved however by a little gun oil and loosening the torq screws ever so slightly, then working the pivots back and forth repeatedly. Everything opens fine now, however there are still rust spots on the plyer head in the coarse ground areas. This was my stupidity however, and not the tools fault. Steel and salt water don't mix.
It would have gotten 5 stars except that I felt it lacked one useful feature; A file. I can see several places they could have incorporated a file, even if in the outer handle structure. Maybe even on the side of the blade. If it had a file, it would have gotten 5 stars.
SUMMARY: A very good BASIC multi-tool. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of larger tools, so if you want saws and scissors and a fold-out BBQ grill, go with something else. If you want a bare bones, light weight EDC tool that fits in your pocket (relatively comfortably) this is it. Highly Recommended.
Decent tool until it broke June 30, 2008 I had the tool for a couple of months and thought it was a decent tool. It has all the good gadgets but the form could be better. The pliers are not as comfortable to use as I would hope - the screwdriver tip can dig into your hand. Anyway, I thought it was still okay until it failed when the pliers broke - more like shattered. I wasn't abusing them, but apparently I applied too much force. The pliers are really too thin at the joint. Turned out to be a waste of money for me. Now I have to pay to ship them to Leatherman and see what happens there.
Sweet! needs a sheath June 24, 2008 I bought the Skeletool and the additional bit pack for use in my hobby as a professional bass angler. High performance bass boats have all sorts of fasteners that tend to vibrate loose, not to mention the need to remove trolling motor prop nuts to clear the errant line from break-offs, tighten reel handle nuts, remove hooks from fish and a myriad of other little chores during a day on the water. I'm also a small wood working shop owner and have found a number of uses for this tool in the shop, especially with the extra bits. I have used many different multitools in the past from Leatherman, Gerber, SOG, Remington and they've all had their pro's and con's but this tool seems to shine at more of the little work-a-day annoyances that come up when you're away from the toolbox. With the optional extra bit pack you won't have to chase those specialty screwdrivers (torx, square, star, allen)for every little loose fastener. I would have preferred that it came with a sheath just because I don't like pocket clips but I had an old sheath from a plier type tool that holds it securely in the open position, which is how I use it most frequently on the boat.
Love my new Skeletool June 12, 2008 This lightweight compact tool focuses on the four things that I need the most: knife, pliers, wire cutters, and screw driver. It feels solid during use, the knife locks safely and has a nice edge. The screw driver has interchangeable bits to handle all types of screws. With the built in clip I don't have to thread a sheath onto my belt, I clip it to anything with a loop.
My new favorite leatherman. June 9, 2008 I've been carrying a Charge XTi around for almost 4 years at work. I picked a Skeletool up just as something to use around the house when I need it because it's a lot more convenient to carry around. Well now my Charge sits in a drawer at work and I just take this thing everywhere.
It's so much easier and more convenient to carry around and still has all the tools that I need 95% of the time. I like the shape a lot more than the other Leatherman tools and the pliers feel way more solid in my hand. It only has 4 different bits, but the storage is pretty handy. If you have the Leatherman bit set they'll all fit in that same storage space so you can carry around whatever you wish.
I went with the regular version instead of the CX version for two reasons. I wanted a knife that wasn't serrated so it'd be easier to sharpen. I also couldn't justify the increase in price since it really didn't decrease the weight by much (if at all) and just looks cooler in black.
